Ministry names top natural resources, environment-related events

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has selected 10 outstanding events in tis sector in 2016.

Hanoi (VNA) – The issuance of a national plan to implement theParis Agreement on climate change and the completion of maps of theVietnam-Laos borderline are among outstanding events relating to naturalresources and environment in 2016.

The list is compiled by the Ministry of NaturalResources and Environment (MoNRE) as follows: 

1. An action programme of the Party delegationto and the Party Committee of the MoNRE was issued to execute the Resolution ofthe 12th National Party Congress. It aims for fundamental improvements in theexploitation and use of natural resources, and control of environmentalpollution while working towards a green economy, and proactively responding toclimate change.

2. The Government’s teleconference onenvironmental protection on August 31, 2016 and the Prime Minister’s issuanceof Directive 25/CT-TTg, on some urgent tasks and solutions on environmentalprotection. The directive, based on the outcomes of the teleconference, devisesnew approaches along with concrete and breakthrough solutions and tasks tothoroughly deal with existing environmental problems. The Prime Minister’sconsistent viewpoint, as shown in this directive, is not to exchange theenvironment for economic growth, and that economic development must beassociated with environmental protection.

3. The first-ever master plan on a nationalnatural resources and environment monitoring network was approved for 2016-2025,with a vision to 2030, by the PM on January 12, 2016.

4. A planning on the network of the MoNRE’spublic service institutions by 2020, with a vision to 2030, was approved by thePM on November 25, 2016. It is an important legal foundation for organisingthose institutions in a lean and synchronous manner.

5. Vietnam participated in the Global GreenGrowth Forum (3GF). The MoNRE signed a memorandum of understanding oncooperation with 3GF, becoming the first ASEAN member nation to take part in theforum. The forum was a chance for Vietnam to promote green growth throughconnecting different spheres, especially public-private partnership. Meanwhile,3GF’s experience in mobilising financial and human resources for green growthactivities around the world can also help Vietnam in climate change responseand green growth promotion.

6. The land use master plan until 2020 and thenational land use plan for 2016-2020 were approved at the 11th session of the13th National Assembly on April 9, 2016. Accordingly, land use criteria until2020 were aligned with targets and tasks in socio-economic development, defenceand security in the new period.

7. The signing and ratification of the ParisAgreement on climate change, and the issuance of an implementation plan forthis deal. The Government approved the historic Paris Agreement and the nationalplan to implement it on October 28, 2016, right on the threshold of COP22 inMorocco.

8. The discovery of copper and uranium ore inDak Ruong commune of Kon Plong district, the Central Highlands province of KonTum. The reserves of those minerals are estimated at 108,925 tonnes and 241.7tonnes, respectively. This discovery holds a good prospect of more uraniumreserves in Kon Tum, as well as the Central Highlands region.

9. The completion of a set of maps of theVietnam-Laos borderline at the 1:50,000 scale. This set of maps is attached tothe protocol on Vietnam-Laos borderline and border markers and the agreement onregulations on border and border gate management, which were inked between thetwo countries in March 2016. It helps to provide a solid foundation forbuilding the countries’ shared boundary into a border of peace, friendship,cooperation and long-term stability.

10. The MoNRE conducted management and steeringactivities on an electronic environment. The work aims to promoteadministrative reforms and an e-Government.-VNA

🅰 PM orders strengthened disaster preparedness ahead of storm season

Under the directive, the PM instructed relevant agencies to regularly inspect, supervise and proactively implement disaster prevention, response and rescue measures in line with their assigned roles and mandates, ensuring readiness, avoiding passivity or delays, and maintaining operational continuity amid ongoing political and administrative restructuring at levels.

ꦏ Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

🦹 Wutip storm ravages central Vietnam, leaving trail of destruction

Wutip, the first storm in the East Sea so far this year, has wreaked havoc across central Vietnam, claiming lives, displacing residents, and causing widespread damage to houses, crops, and infrastructure, the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention and Control reported as of 6:30 pm on June 13.

🐠 Vietnam engages in Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

♏ Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
