Ministry aims to enhance control of air pollution

Hanoi (VNS/VNA) - The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmenthas been compiling a directive of urban air pollution control which is set tobe issued in August.

Air pollution in big cities such as Hanoi and HCM City has become worse inrecent years and reached alarming levels on many days, affecting people’shealth.

The draft directive on enhancing air pollution control in urban areas has beenmade available for comment and consultation among ministries and agenciesnationwide.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the directiveis expected to encourage provinces and cities, especially big cities, toimplement plans of air pollution and gas emission control, and PM10 and PM2.5dust monitoring.

The directive will also ask Hanoi, HCM City and other cities and provinces athigh risk of air pollution to monitor emission sources and propose plans ofrestricting vehicles travelling to inner-cities on very bad and hazardouspollution days.

Local authorities will have to rationally divide traffic flow to limitprolonged congestion causing environmental pollution.

At the same time, localities have to accelerate plans of expanding publictransport networks, eventually replacing motorbikes and other fossil-fuelledvehicles.

Old and ragged vehicles must be banned from circulation while the use of electricand gas vehicles in inner-cities should be encouraged.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will continue to complete thelegal framework on environmental protection and air quality monitoring and takeprime responsibility for implementing the national action plan on air qualitycontrol.

The Ministry of Transport is responsible for the roadmap of gas emissionstandards after it is approved by the Government.

The ministry will set up strategies and roadmaps to develop environmentally-friendlymeans of transport.

The Ministry of Construction shall issue regulations on environmentalprotection for construction activities and study noise-proof materials forconstruction works.

The Ministry of Health will assess the impact of air pollution on health andpropose measures to protect people’s health./.

Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatme💦nt efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
