Mercosur hopes to become main food supplier of ASEAN

The South American trade bloc Mercosur hopes to become a main food supplier of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the next 50 years, according to President of the Mercosur-ASEAN Chamber of Commerce Rodolfo Caffaro.

Buenos Aires (VNA) –
The South American trade bloc Mercosur hopes to become a main foodsupplier of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the next 50years, according to President of the Mercosur-ASEAN Chamber of Commerce Rodolfo Caffaro.

Speaking at a meeting with Paraguayan ForeignMinister Luis Alberto Castiglioni in Asuncion on March 7, Caffaro pointed tothe great potential of trade between the two blocs, and laid emphasis on theneed to approach the big market of ASEAN.

He said with 650 million peopleand an average growth of 6.5 – 7 percent a year, the Southeast Asian regionwill be an important consumption market in the next 50 years.

Furthermore, the region will behome to nearly 60 percent of the world’s middle-income group during 2025-2030, whichhe said would create a shortage of food, hence opportunities for Mercosur.

Caffaro suggested that FMCastiglioni works to increase diplomatic presence and promote products of Mercosurin general and Paraguay in particular in Southeast Asia.

He affirmed support for efforts to set up and expandbilateral trade relations between Mercosur and ASEAN.

According to Caffaro, the twosides should start talks on signed agreements that have not been concretised, anddevelop cooperative models between buyers and sellers as partners in a valuechain for mutual benefits.

Mercosur (officially known as the Southern CommonMarket) comprises Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Meanwhile, the ASEAN has 10member states, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, thePhilippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.-VNA
