Mekong Delta seeks sustainable wetland usage

The fourth forum on natural resources and cultural preservation, towards the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta, took place in the southern province of Dong Thap on May 21.
The fourth forum on natural resources and cultural preservation, towardsthe sustainable development of the Mekong Delta, took place in thesouthern province of Dong Thap on May 21.

Organised by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, theevent took the theme, “Proper usage of wetlands in the Mekong Delta”.

Participants reviewed Vietnam ’s implementation ofthe Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance anddiscussed opportunities and challenges facing wetlands in the region.

They also shared experience in preserving anddeveloping a number of Ramsar sites in a sustainable manner, discussedthe potential of Lang Sen wetlands and Mui Ca Mau and U Minh Thuongnational parks to become Ramsar sites and proposed criteria and roadmapsfor registering more Ramsar sites in the region from now until 2015.

At the event, the Deputy Minister of Natural Resourcesand Environment Nguyen Van Duc called for more educational campaigns inan effort towards preserving biodiversity, in combination with povertyreduction and coping with climate change.

He alsoasked relevant agencies to zone wetlands of global and nationalsignificance for Ramsar site recognition in the future, increaseinternational cooperation in the environmental field and effectively useglobal financial assistance for the field.

Biodiversity preservation status applies to 2.7 percent of Mekong Deltawetlands, while the remainder is utilised for socio-economicdevelopment.-VNA

Vietnam pioneers use of AI and r🅰emote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

Wutip storm ♚ravages central Vietnam, leaving trail of destruction

Wutip, the first storm in the East Sea so far this year, has wreaked havoc across central Vietnam, claiming lives, displacing residents, and causing widespread damage to houses, crops, and infrastructure, the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention and Control reported as of 6:30 pm on June 13.

Vietnam rampꦺs up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
