The Mekong Delta province of Long An plans to invest about 1.58 trillion VND (over 70 million USD) to build irrigation facilities to cope with climate change and protect local production.
LongAn (VNA) – The Mekong Delta province of LongAn plans to invest about 1.58 trillion VND (over 70 million USD) to buildirrigation facilities to cope with climate change and protect local production.
Theproject will be carried out in Dong Thap Muoi (the Plain of Reeds) and coastaldistricts of Can Duoc and Can Giuoc with funds mainly sourced from the Statebudget.
Theagriculture sector will build an electric pumping system in Thu Thua districtand upgrade the irrigation system in Thu Thua and Tan Tru districts to make useof fresh water from the Vam Co Tay (west) River during the dry season.
Awater reservoir will be built along the river in Vinh Hung and Thanh Hoadistricts with total investment of over 790 billion VND (35 million USD), whichwill provide water for a vast area of Dong Thap Muoi in the dry season.
Thelocality will also build a dyke system along the Soai Rap and Vam Co Rivers todeal with rising water levels at Long Huu Dong (east) and Long Huu Tay (west)in Can Duoc district.
Morethan 500 billion VND (22.1 million USD) will be used to upgrade 5,000 facilitiesto exploit underground water and create a water pipeline for rural areas.
Theprovince has devised scenarios to mitigate the impacts of environmental changesin separate sectors and areas, while integrating climate change adaptationmeasures into the local socio-economic development plan.-VNA
