Mekong Delta needs more inter-provincial projects to boost development

Can Tho (VNA) – Officials ofthe Mekong Delta city of Can Tho had a working session with a delegation of theGerman Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) on May 11 to discuss theurban flood proofing and drainage programme for adaptation to climate change (FPP)that is being implemented in the region.
Programme Director Tim McGrath saidthe FPP is coordinating with many agencies to carry out research and supportactivities in multiple socio-economic aspects while studying special mechanismsand policies for the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta and its Ca MauPeninsula sub-region.
He noted that the GIZ is workingwith the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) on theimplementation of a new programme from 2021 to 2025 in the 13 provincial-level localitiesof the Mekong Delta at a total cost of some 13-15 million EUR (14-16 millionUSD).
This new programme will consist ofthree parts with the first one on State management that will continuesupporting regional connectivity, the second on coordination mechanisms for theregion, and the third on inter-provincial infrastructure.
At the meeting, Vice Chairman of theCan Tho People’s Committee Dao Anh Dung said transport, logistics, irrigation,and anti-erosion and subsidence are the issues that the Mekong Delta currentlyneeds inter-provincial projects on to boost the region’s common development. Heasked the GIZ to reconsider mechanisms and policies on regional connectivity,council and management to help solve these problems.
Can Tho is ready to cooperate withthe GIZ in studies, surveys and information sharing so that the programme canassist the city in line with both sides’ requirements, he noted.
Theofficial added that as his city is making flood drainage planning, buildinganti-flooding structures and devising a development plan for 2021-2030, ithopes to take part in the urban floodproofing and drainage programme that the GIZ is assisting Mekong Deltalocalities with./.
