Mekong Delta aims to become special tourist area by 2020

Measures to realise a master plan on tourism development in the Mekong Delta to 2020 with a vision to 2030 were discussed at a conference held in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on April 5.

Can Tho (VNA) – Measuresto realise a master plan on tourism development in the Mekong Delta to 2020 witha vision to 2030 were discussed at a conference held in the Mekong Delta cityof Can Tho on April 5.

The master plan, approved by thePrime Minister last year, aims to turn the Mekong Delta into a special touristarea of the country, with the goal of welcoming around 34 million tourists,including 3.5 million foreigners by 2020, and about 52 million visitors,including 6.5 million foreigners by 2030.

The region strives to offer about53,000 hotel rooms by 2020, some 15 percent of which are third to five-starones. The room number is projected to increase to 100,000 in 2030.

Meanwhile, the regional tourismsector targets generating jobs for nearly 230,000 workers by 2020, including77,000 direct jobs. By 2030, the respective figure will be 450,000 and 150,000. 

Priority will be given to developing waterway, ecological, cultural heritagetourism products which are particular to the region besides the mainstay of seaand entertainment tourism, supported by tours of rural areas, historicalrelics, and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions).

The PM’s Decision 2227/QD-TTg approvingthe master plan also pointed out 10 measures involving planning and managementmechanisms, investment mobilization, human resources development, promotionactivities, connectivity, the protection of natural resources and environmentprotection in tandem with climate change response, scientific-technologicalapplication, and national defence-security.

Participants discussed measures tocarry out the master plan regarding infrastructure, transport, human resources,among others.
