A new cooperation mechanism increasing connectivity among tourismdestinations would allow countries in Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) todiversify their tourism products and satisfy tourists’ growing demandand increasingly diverse tastes.

The mechanismis one of the suggestions put forward at the Mekong Tourism Forum 2015within the GMS cooperation framework which is taking place in Da Nangcity from June 15-18.

The GMS, which includesCambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and China’s Yunnan andGuangxi provinces, has been deemed full of tourism potential given thecultural and natural richness with dozens of natural heritagesrecognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and CulturalOrganisation (UNESCO).

According to DeputyMinister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Khanh Hai, tourism has becomean increasingly important economic sector in Vietnam in recent years.

With the ease of transport communications betweenVietnam and other countries in the region, Vietnam attaches importanceto tourism cooperation with nations in the GMS.

With the close cooperation among national tourism agencies, assistancefrom international organisations and active participation of enterprisesand relevant parties, the GMS is becoming an appealing region forinvestors and a dynamic tourism market, Hai said.

Fierce competition still persists, Hai said, urging countries toresponsibly contribute to the region’s tourism development and joinforces to develop high-quality products to compete with other regions inthe world.-VNA
