Scientists from domestic universities and research institutes andJapan’s Tohuku University made practical proposals to prevent erosionalong Cua Dai beach in central Quang Nam province at a workshop onDecember 24.

The serious destruction occurringalong the 7-kilometre coastline is posing direct threats to nearbytourism facilities and residential areas and intruding into cultivatedland, participants noted.

They stressed the needto carefully look at terrain, geological, hydro-geological and windconditions at the beach and in surrounding areas as well as seawaterflows in order to define a scientific foundation for main reasons andfactors for the phenomenon.

Scientists suggested building sea embankments and dykes to protect river mouth and coastal areas.

Quang Nam should take prompt measures to prevent sand dredgingactivities on Vu Gia and Thu Bon rivers, which are a direct reason forerosion along Cua Dai beach.

Cua Dai beach, which is 5km from Hoi An's old quarter, is a favourite location fortourists visiting the UNESCO-recognised ancient city.

Erosion has come closer to the main section of the 1.5km roadconnecting the beach with Hoi An, threatening dozens of resorts. Risingsea levels have already washed a 20-hectare area of Cua Dai beachaway.-VNA

Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycl💙ing, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
