Man arrested for involvement in exam cheating in Ha Giang

The investigation bureau of the Ha Giang police on July 20 began criminal proceedings against and issued a three-month temporary detention warrant for Vu Trong Luong,for his involvement in the exam cheating scandal in the province.

Ha Giang (VNA) – The investigation bureau of the Ha Giang police onJuly 20 began criminal proceedings against and issued a three-month temporarydetention warrant for Vu Trong Luong, born in 1978, for his involvement in the nationalhigh school graduation exam cheating scandal in the northern mountainousprovince.

Luong, who is Deputy Chief of the Examination and QualityManagement Division under the provincial Department of Education and Training,is charged with “abusing position and power while on duty”.

Initial investigation revealed that Luong took advantage ofhis position and power to intervene in the results of 330 multiple-choice testsheets of 114 students in Ha Giang which were adjusted up over 1.0 point each.

Several students ended up with results more than 20 markshigher than they should have got. Some even enjoyed 29.95 marks better off.

The act of raising examinees’ scores has seriously violatedexam regulations.

Further investigation into the scandal is underway.

The result of national high school examinations have beenused for four years now to determine if a student graduates from high schooland gets into their dream university or not.

Since 2017, the multi-choice form has been applied to alltests except for literature. In 2018, MoET tightened the exam’s security bysealing bags of answer sheets with signatures of supervisors and universities’representatives.

The last examination was taken by 5,400 Ha Giang students.In the top 11 students nationwide with highest scores, the province contributedthree. -VNA
