Malaysia: Trial of Vietnamese defendant delayed

The Shah Alam High Court in Selangor state of Malaysia on March 14 decided to postpone the trial of Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong until April 1, citing the defendant’s poor health and psychological condition.

Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – The Shah Alam High Court inSelangor state of Malaysia on March 14 decided to postpone the trial ofVietnamese Doan Thi Huong until April 1, citing the defendant’s poor health andpsychological condition.

The court made the decision after a discussionbetween prosecutors and Huong’s lawyer after the start of the trial earlier inthe morning the same day.

After the decision was announced, Huong, asuspect in the murder of the holder of a Democratic People’s Republic of Koreanpassport with the name of Kim Chol, met with Vietnamese Ambassador to MalaysiaLe Quy Quynh. She thanked the Vietnamese State, the embassy and the diplomatfor paying attention to her.

She also reiterated that she is innocent andalso hopes for continued assistance from the embassy and relevant agencies.

Ambassador Quynh said the lawyer and the embassywill make utmost efforts to support Huong. He also affirmed that the VietnameseGovernment and embassy hope that Malaysia will try the suspect in a fair mannerand soon release her.

Earlier, Huong’s lawyer asked the Ministry ofJustice and the Attorney General of Malaysia to release her after SitiAisyah, the Indonesian suspect in the same case, had been freed on March 11.Malaysian prosecutors did not give the reason for the withdrawal of the chargeagainst Siti Aisyah.

At a trial in August 2018, the high courtdeclared they had collected sufficient evidence to indicate the two women andfour DPRK suspects who fled the country had taken part in a scheme to murderKim Chol.-VNA
