Former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will seek to return to politics by participating in a local election next month to become a lawmaker.
Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will seek toreturn to politics by participating in a local election next month to become alawmaker.
Anwar, 71, is a member in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) alliance which won a shockelection victory in May, is expected to win the by-election on October13 after Danyal Balagopal Abdullah from the People's Justice Party quitparliament last week.
He needs to be elected to parliament to qualify to succeed Prime Minister MahathirMohamad.
Earlier, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, 93, pledged to step down after twoyears and hand over the country's leadership to Anwar Ibrahim, who was sackedin September 1998 as Deputy PM by then PM Mahathir.
Following the May election, Anwar received a royal pardon to allow his release fromprison at the request of Prime Minister Mahathir.-VNA
