Localities urged to reduce poverty rate in ethnic minority regions
Minister-Chairman of the Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs Do Van Chien has asked localities to reduce the proportion of poor households in the ethnic minority and mountainous regions by 3-4 percent per year from now to 2020.
Hanoi (VNA) – Minister-Chairman of the Committee for Ethnic MinorityAffairs Do Van Chien has asked localities to reduce the proportion of poor householdsin the ethnic minority and mountainous regions by 3-4 percent per year from nowto 2020.
Speaking ata conference of the committee in Hanoi on January 11, Chien requested localauthorities to continuously work to ensure rapid and sustainable socio-economicdevelopment in these areas, especially regarding farmland and water shortagesettlement, and jobs change for over 80 percent of needy families.
He told localethnic minority affairs departments to further improve the quality of humanresources, and boost social and cultural development as well as strengthen thegrassroots-level political system, ensure the great national unity anddefense-security, and reinforce trust of people in the Party and State.
In 2016, theCommittee for Ethnic Minority Affairs spent over 7 trillion VND (315 millionUSD) building nearly 6,000 infrastructural facilities and 90 water supply worksfor over 140,000 households in the ethnic minority and mountainous regions.
The moneywas also used to support more than 400,000 poor and near-poor families to buycrops, fertilizer, equipment, and develop some effective production models.
Nearly29,000 households living under the poverty line were provided with loans todevelop production, while 700 capacity-building classes were opened for officialsand residents.-VNA
The Prime Minister has recently agreed to prolong the implementation of policy on education supports for students of very small ethnic minority groups.
The government’s Committee for Ethnic Affairs should pay attention to implementing relevant resolutions and directives of the Party Central Committee, the NA and the Government on ethnic affairs.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.
