Localities should continue improving ethnic boarding schools: Minister

Yen Bai (VNA) – Minister of Education and Training Phung Xuan Nha hassuggested localities continuously improve the system of boarding schools for ethnicminority students.
He made the recommendation whileattending a conference in the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai onDecember 18 to review the 10-year development of ethnic boarding schools.
He called for a focus on developing high quality human resources and improvingthe quality of care for boarding students, especially those from ethnicminority and mountainous regions.
The minister took note of the constructive opinions raised at the event andpledged to remove difficulties in ethnic minority education.
According to Chairman of the Yen Bai People’s Committee Do Duc Duy, theprovince is now home to nine ethnic minority boarding schools, including sevenmeeting national standards, with 88 classes and more than 2,900 students.
Thanks to the attention of theMinistry of Education and Training and other agencies, the quality of educationat all levels in the province has much improved, he said, adding that theprovince pays special heed to education for ethnic minority students.
At present, the country has 315 ethnic minority boarding schools in 49centrally-run cities and provinces with more than 109,000 students.-VNA
Self-managed councils of students and children’s clubs have been formed in ten schools in the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai from 2015-2018, helping promote children’s participation in improving the learning environment quality.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has approved a national target programme on education for ethnic minority, mountainous and disadvantaged areas across the country between 2016 and 2020.
Day boarding has been available at many schools in Song Ma district, in the northern mountainous province of Son La for years, which has helped maintain high class attendance and improve education quality.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.
