Thailand is exploring small modular nuclear reactor technology, as the Southeast Asian country looks to diversify its energy mix amidst dwindling reserves of natural gas that produces much of its power.

Thailand’s energy authorities are preparing to make an electricity saving campaign a mandate for households and businesses as they struggle to deal with the high prices of liquefied natural gas (LNG) which may keep soaring in the winter, putting more financial burden on national power generation, reported the Bangkok Post.

Demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) will continue to be strong, outpacing domestic production by 2020 requiring the country to import around one million cubic metres a year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
