Laos upgrades health care system in face of climate change
The five-year Strengthening Climate Resilience of Lao Health System project, funded by the Green Climate Fund, will support the implementation of Laos’ national health and climate change adaptation plan.
Vientiane (VNA) - The Lao Ministry of Health is working closely with development partners to upgrade the country’s health care system and strengthen its resilience to the impacts of climate change.
According to the Lao News Agency, the five-year Strengthening Climate Resilience of Lao Health System project, funded by the Green Climate Fund, will support the implementation of Laos’ national health and climate change adaptation plan.
The project aims to upgrade 100 healthcare facilities and assist 250 communities across 25 districts in seven provinces - Luang Prabang, Luang Namtha, Phongsaly, Oudomxay, Salavan, Khammuan and Sekong.
Key activities include training healthcare workers to address climate-related health risks, upgrading infrastructure, and raising community awareness. The project will also focus on expanding early warning systems and improving healthcare access for more than 2.3 million people in high-risk rural areas.
Climate change is posing an increasing threat to Laos, with rising temperatures, natural disasters, and air pollution. These changes not only pose serious risks to public health but also threa🅠ten essential healthcare infrastructure and increase the spread of diseases such as malaria and diarrhoea./.
Laos' Enabling Environment Roadmap for Infrastructure Asset Management (IAM EE) outlines strategies for the effective management of public infrastructure, including roads, schools, and hospitals, with a focus on resilience, inclusivity, and sustainability.
