Phongxaysak Inthalath, Director General of the Labour Management Department of Laos said the two sides’ officials are discussing an amendment to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field signed by the two governments in 2002.
The amended MoU will cover three aspects of employment, protection of workers’ interests and skill training, with the last being the new point.
The amendment is scheduled to be tabled at a meeting next week, and the revised MoU is expected to be signed by the end of next month, Phongxaysak Inthalath revealed.
Statistics from Laos’ Ministry of Skill Development and Employment show that 277,439 Lao nationals are working legally in Thailand. However, a number of Lao people are still working illegally in Thailand. The governments of both countries are working together to legalise their status.-VNA
