Laos could earn over 200 million USD from buffalo, cattle export this year

Vientiane (VNA) – Despitetrading difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,  Laos' buffalo and cattleexports could exceed 200 million USD this year, according to the VientianeTimes.

Data from the Lao Ministry ofIndustry and Commerce shows that this country earned nearly 180 million USD inbuffalo and cattle exports in the first nine months of 2021.

Last year, the export value topped250 million USD. Vietnam was the largest buyer with imports worth 247 millionUSD.

The newspaper said the LaoGovernment is calling on farmers nationwide to promote livestock production forexport, especially to China, inanticipation of the upcoming operation of the Laos - China railway, which is expectedto facilitate transportation.

The Lao Ministry of Agriculture andForestry recently said this country’s government plans to produce at least50,000 cattle annually.

Under an inter-governmentalagreement, Laos has beengranted a quota of 500,000 cattle for export to China.

Lao officials held that the sale of cattle toChina could generate huge returns, not only to producers and farmers, but alsoto the nation as a whole, the Vientiane Times reported./.
