Kien Giang needs over 68.8 million USD to tackle coastal erosion

The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang needs more than 1.6 trillion VND (68.8 million USD) to fight coastal erosion, according to Nguyen Van Tam, Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Kien Giang (VNA) – The Mekong Delta province ofKien Giang needs more than 1.6 trillion VND (68.8 million USD) to fight coastalerosion, according to Nguyen Van Tam, Director of the provincial Department ofAgriculture and Rural Development.

The official said 80 out of the total 200 km of the localcoastline are being eroded.

There are 25km of eroded sea dyke in Tho Son commune, HonDat district, requiring about 625 billion VND to repair. To date, the Ministryof Planning and Investment has allocated 100 billion VND for the work.

The Kien Giang People’s Committee has decided to list three sectionsspanning 15.7 km in An Bien and An Minh districts as facing an emergency becauseof erosion. They need an investment of 333 billion VND.

Meanwhile, Kien Giang has other areas stretching 62.6 km inthe districts of An Bien, An Minh and Kien Luong facing severe erosion that arein need of 659 billion VND.

In 2018, local authorities asked the Government to provideabout 300 billion VND to improve seriously eroded parts, and the proposal wasaccepted.

The province received 172 billion VND from the World Bank’sloans to build coastal protection works with a length of 10 km in An Minhdistrict.

It received 50 billion VND from the State reserve budget toimprove 2.5 km of eroded dyke sections in An Bien district, and 80 billion VNDfrom the fund for climate change and green growth to deal with dangerouslandslides in Hon Dat district./.
