Kien Giang (VNA) – Fishermen inthe Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang have taken their vessels offshore againfor fishing, resuming their operations at sea as COVID-19 has been put undercontrol.
As part of efforts to support local fishermen,Kien Giang has created favourable conditions for the operations of seafoodproduction, buying and processing facilities, while asking the health sector to speed up COVID-19 vaccination for labourers in the fisheries sector.
Local authorised agencies haveoffered assistance to owners of fishing vessels to upgrade their vessels toimprove the capacity of seafood storage and improve their products’ quality.
Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee LamMinh Thanh said that the committee has asked departments and sectors tocoordinate closely together to support local fishermen to operate at sea for along term, while effectively implementing the policies on fisheriesdevelopment, and stabilising product prices.

The province has requested the commercial banksystem to support fisheries firms and owners of vessels facing difficulties.The locality has asked the State Bank of Vietnam to propose theGovernment take measures to freeze and reschedule debts for fishing vesselowners hit by the pandemic. Kien Giang has also assigned the Department ofAgriculture and Rural Development to design plans to recover the fisheries sectorafter the pandemic, he said.
Kien Giang is one of the coastal localities thatare strong in fishing with a large fishing vessel fleet. Currently, theprovince has finished the installation of vessel monitoring system (VMS) on99.15 percent of local fishing vessels having a length from 15m./.
