JICA provides assistance in road maintenance

The second phase of the Project for Capacity Enhancement in Road Maintenance will commence in December with financial and technical support from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), according to a document signed between the Ministry of Transport and JICA in Hanoi on November 5.

At the signing ceremony, DeputyMinister of Transport Nguyen Hong Truong highlighted the need for thesustainable maintenance and management of Vietnam ’s road system,saying that the country’s transport system was a crucial foundation foreconomic development.

In phase 2, the project will focus onimproving the property management system (PMS) for national roads viapilot projects with standardised criteria and action plans.

Otherobjectives include building the capacity of management staff andproviding technical assistance for project implementation.

Phase 1 of the project ran from September 2011 to April 2014.

The project is part of the Agreement on Technical Cooperation signedin 1998 and the Exchange Note signed between the two countries in Julythis year.-VNA
