Japan, Cambodia agree to work on Mekong region development

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and his Cambodian counterpart Hor Namhong agreed to keep working together over infrastructure development in Cambodia and four other countries along the Mekong River during their meeting in Tokyo on June 2.

They metahead of a summit in Tokyo on July 4 that will gather Japanese PrimeMinister Shinzo Abe and the leaders of five Southeast Asian nationsknown as Mekong states -- Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand andVietnam, Japan's Foreign Ministry said.

Japan willcontinue to provide assistance for infrastructure building in Cambodiaand help boost intraregional connectivity, said Kishida.

Hor Namhong, who is also Cambodia's deputy prime minister, said thedevelopment of the Mekong region will contribute to connecting thewhole region covering members of the Association of Southeast AsianNations.

Assisting infrastructure development inCambodia is part of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s investmentinitiative announced last May. Accordingly, Japan will provide 110billion USD to promote "quality infrastructure" in Asia over the nextfive years.-VNA
