The Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang is intensifying efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing as part of the country’s goal of having the European Commission’s “yellow card” warning lifted.
Ben Tre province now has 3,649 registered fishing vessels, with 3,474 licensed to operate, accounting for 95.2%. Of the boats required to undergo technical inspections, 2,282 have completed the procedure, equivalent to 91.76%. A total of 1,998 vessels are mandated to have VMS devices installed, with a compliance rate of 98.96%.
Since 2023, no vessel exceeding 24 metres has disconnected its tracking systems for more than six hours, and no vessel has lost connections for more than ten days. Particularly, no local vessels have been caught fishing illegally in foreign waters.
Authorities have pursued cases involving serious offenses such as illegal border crossings, fraud, document forgery, vessel monitoring system (VMS) tampering, and the unauthorised use of explosives for fishing.
