Hanoi (VNA) – Theself-claimed Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for tw🥂in bombingsat a cathedral that killed at leas𒉰t 19 people and injured 48 others in the Philippineson January 27.

Accordingto the SITE Intelligence Group which monitors the extremist organisation'sonline activity, the IS directly releasedits own statement claiming it was behind the attack shortly afterwards, sayingthat the two suicide bombers detonated explosive belts in the church and aparking area in Jojo city, Sulu province – a stronghold of Islamic militants inthe Catholic-majority nation. The twin explosionshappened after a mass at 8am (local time). The victims were mostly governmenttroops and civilians. The bombings tookplace days after the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), a newlaw that paves the way for the creation of a wider autonomous region for MuslimFilipinos in Mindanao. Although Muslimsoverwhelmingly approved the law, Sulu province, where Jolo is located, votedagainst the autonomous government. The Philippine Commissionon Elections earlier said the law was ratified after getting more than 1.5million favourable votes.-VNA
