IOM pledges close cooperation with Vietnam to support migrant workers

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) pledges to work closely with the Vietnamese Government to develop migrant workers’ skills, give them better employment chances, and improve their migration experience, said IOM Chief of Mission in Vietnam Park Mihyung.

Hanoi (VNA) – The International Organisation forMigration (IOM) pledges to workclosely with the Vietnamese Government to develop migrant workers’ skills, givethem better employment chances, and improve their migration experience, said IOM Chief of Mission in Vietnam Park Mihyung.

She made the remark while addressing a consultation held onApril 19 to discuss the cooperation programme on labour migration for 2024 -2028.

The event was held by the Overseas Labour Department underthe Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs and the IOM. It was alsoattended by officials of the departments of labour, invalids and social affairsof nine localities with large numbers of people working overseas.

Park highlighted the IOM’s collaboration with Vietnam andother related parties like non-governmental and social organisations to promotesafe and orderly labour migration based on the Sustainable Development Goals inthe country.

The IOM highly values the Vietnamese Government’s importantcommitments to protecting migrant workers’ rights and creating a favourableenvironment for facilitating safe labour migration to benefit people, thecommunity, and local socio-economic development, Park added.

Dang Si Dung, Deputy Director of the OverseasLabour Department, applauded the IOM’s cooperation programmes and activities inVietnam, including technical and financial assistance for building anddisseminating laws, improving cadres’ capacity and people’s awareness of safelabour migration, and protecting migrant workers abroad.

He particularlyappreciated the IOM’s support for making and popularising the law on Vietnameseguest workers, and publishing two health handbooks for those working in Japanand the Republic of Korea.

The official expressed his hope for continued partnership withthe IOM to raise migrant workers’ awareness and help them make migrationdecisions with sufficient information and via safe channels.

At the consultation, participants also considered cooperationpriorities and targets in labour migration./.
