Jakarta (VNA) - The Lewotobi Laki-laki volcano in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia, erupted 110 times over just eight days, from April 18-25, according to Indonesia's Geological Agency under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).
These eruptions have been visible to the naked eye and confirmed through seismic measurements.
Head of the agency Muhammad Wafid reported that hundreds of earthquakes of varying magnitudes accompanied these eruptions. Experts’ visual observations indicate a significant increase in volcanic activity, with eruption columns reaching an average height of 2,500-3,000 metres.
He said that comprehensive analysis and evaluation data show that both visual and seismic activity on the mount remain high, currently at alert level 2.
🅺 The ESDM has advised communities and tourists to maintain a safe distance of at least 6 kilometres from the crater. Everyone should stay calm and follow instructions from local government officials. Communities surrounding the mount are being warned to be vigilant about the risk of lava floods caused by rainfall in rivers originating from the mountaintop./.
The long eruption on late March 20 prompted the country's geological agency to raise Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki's alert level to the highest of the four-tiered system.
The volcano, situated on Halmahera Island, spewed a column of ash up to 2,000 metres into the sky. Thick white-to-grey clouds drifted south of the crater.
