Indonesian Government warns citizens against flu

The Indonesian Government has warned its citizens against flu as it can lead to fatal complications such as pneumonia, as the government learns that many Indonesian people do not seek medical help until the disease becomes worse.
Jakarta (VNA) – The Indonesian Government has warned its citizens against flu as it canlead to fatal complications such as pneumonia, as the government learns thatmany Indonesian people do not seek medical help until the disease becomesworse.

Amidst the season withhigh risks of both flu and meningitis, the Indonesia’s Health Ministry advisedthe community to take preventive measures such as vaccination.

Health experts alsorecommended simple measures such as washing hands with soap, covering nose andmouth while coughing and sneezing, using face mask and pasteurizing utensilsbefore using, and avoiding direct contact with infected people.

The IndonesianGovernment was also urged to promote the vaccination for children against thetwo diseases.

According to the WHO, 290,000-650,000people in the world die of respiratory diseases rooting from flu every year.

A report by Indonesia onsevere acute respiratory infection (SARI) from 2013 to 2016 showed that 14percent of SARI cases were negative to flu viruses. The number of SARI casesrelated to flu in the country is about 13-19 out of 100,000 people each year.

According to aresearch by the US Centre for Disease Control Prevention in Yogyakarta city inNorth Sumatra and Balikpapan city in East Kalimantan of Indonesia, the ratio ofthe country’s children infected with flu is high. Many other reports alsoshowed that children are most vulnerable to complications of flu, thus flu preventionamong children should be prioritised in efforts to protect public health.-VNA
