Indonesia urges ASEAN cooperation on energy transition

Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesia is encouragingcollaboration, partnerships, sustainable and inclusive financing, and access toappropriate technologies for accelerating the energy transition, especially inthe Southeast Asian region.
Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Minister ArifinTasrif made the statement during the 41st ASEAN Senior OfficialsMeeting on Energy (41st ASEAN SOME) at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta on June19.
The global energy landscape is urged to sustainably transition from afossil-based economy to a low-carbon one in an inclusive and equitablemanner while considering national circumstances, capabilities, and priorities,Tasrif said.
He underlined the need to enhance intra-bloc collaboration,and between ASEAN and international organisations and stakeholders, sayingthat energy security is as important as the energy transition.
During its 2023 ASEAN chairmanship, Indonesia is spotlighting the importance ofsustainable energy security, which is being implemented through ASEANinterconnectivity as the epicenter of growth, Tasrif said.
ASEAN needs to develop mining and mineral processing units, especially forthose serving the clean energy industry, he said, noting that Malaysia,Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia are key players in renewable energy production,such as photovoltaic (PV) cells and electric vehicles (EVs).
Heexpressed the hope that through the 41st ASEAN😼 SOME, ASEAN countries can further discuss andaddress the latest strategic issues, such as carbon trading and decarbonisationof the oil and gas industry./.
