Jakarta (VNA)ಞ – The Indonesian government expressed optimism that the plan to stop importing sugar and several other commodities in 2025 will be implemented due to increased domestic production.

Speaking with the press on December 19, Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said domestic production is optimistic and the country will not import sugar, salt for consumption, rice or corn.
To implement the policy to end sugar imports, total domestic production needs to reach 3.1 million tonnes per year, he added. Indonesia's sugar production has reached 2.4 million tonnes this year, an increase of 200,000 tonnes from 2.2 million tonnes in 2023. Hasan said that the figure is projected to increase to 2.7 million tonnes in 2025./.
