Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesia will stop exportingcopper concentrates in 2024 when two major domestic copper companies finishbuilding their smelters and begin processing the raw material locally,Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo said on June 20.

Freeport Indonesia and Amman Mineral are expected to putinto operational their new smelters in next May. Indonesia last weekrecommended both companies to continue their exports until then.

Copper, in addition to nickel, is one of the raw materialscrucial for the energy transition process, and Indonesia mines both of them inmassive quantities.

The Southeast Asian nation, which has been looking todevelop nickel processing industries and ultimately produce batteries for EVmanufacturers, is eager to attract foreign companies for those ventures./.
