Indonesia to build two special economic zones on Batam island

The Indonesian Coordinating Economy Ministry said on December 23 that the country will build two special economic zones on Batam island, Riau province, next year while it awaits revisions to the free trade and port zone regulation (KPBPB).

Jakarta (VNA) – TheIndonesian Coordinating Economy Ministrysaid on December 23 that the country will build two special economic zones onBatam island, Riau province, next year while it awaits revisions to the freetrade and port zone regulation (KPBPB).

An official from the ministrysaid a draft revision has been completed andawaiting for the President’s approval.

Meanwhile,Coordinating Minister of Economy Airlangga Hartarto is preparing for thelaunch of the two special trade zones.

In 2019, theIndonesian government approved the construction of two special trade zones,including an aircraft maintenance and repair facility at the Hang NadimInternational Airport and a digital hub in Nongsa.

The countrywill also collaborate with the US smart phone manufacturer Apple at Nongsadigital park.

Since theregional election was launched in 2001, Batam was ruled by a local governmentthat stripped parts of the authority's power over the island.

Since President Joko Widodo took office for asecond term in 2019, his administration has planned to merge the twoauthorities and change the status of the island, from a free trade zone to aspecial economic zone./.
