Jakarta (VNA) -𒉰 Thousands of Indonesian taxi drivers mustered on the main streets of the capital Jakarta on March 22 to protest ride-hailing apps.

First introduced in 2015, car calling apps such as Uber and GrabCar, and motorcycle taxi apps Gojek and GrabBike have become popular in the city with advantages in price and convenience.
But the services have received fierce rejection from taxi and public transportation operators, with taxi drivers citing declining incomes as their operation is not recognised as a form of public transportation. According to local media, long lines of taxis blocked the roads, causing serious traffic jams and chaos citywide.
Protestors gathered in front of the House of Representatives complex and the Presidential Palace, before heading to Sudirman road. Violence occured when some taxi divers stopped and attacked Gojek and GrabBike vehicles. Several bus routes were inoperative, leaving thousands of passengers held up at interchange stations and bus stops.-VNA
