Indonesia speeds up construction of temporary houses for tsunami victims

The Indonesian Government is speeding up construction on temporary houses for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Palu, Central Sulawesi, Vice President Jusuf Kalla has stated.

Jakarta (VNA) – The Indonesian Government is speeding up construction on temporaryhouses for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Palu, Central Sulawesi,Vice President Jusuf Kalla has stated.

Kalla, who is also thePalu disaster mitigation team commander, said that more than 30 percent of theplanned 12,000 temporary victim houses have been finalised and handed over tobeneficiaries.

The Government willbuild a new city to replace Palu as it was entirely destroyed after the earthquake,and subsequent tsunami and soil liquefaction. Victims will be resettled whenthe building of the new city is completed.

The construction isexpected to begin within this year. The necessary cost has yet to be announced,but the Ministry of Public Works and Housing estimates the cost will reach 4trillion IDR (nearly 283.9 million USD).

Sulawesi was ravagedby two quakes measuring 6.1 and 7.5 on the Richter scale on September 28. A 6mtsunami hit the shores after the second quake struck the area in the afternoonof the same day.

The disasters killedmore than 2,200 people, left 1,000 missing, nearly 11,000 injured, and 83,000others forced to evacuate. Economic loss was 1.22 billion USD. The IndonesianGovernment estimated that it would need at least 657 million USD forreconstruction and resettlement works, alongside support from many countriesand international organisations. –VNA
