Indonesia: Quake kills four, damages buildings

Four people were killed and several houses and buildings damaged after a 5.4-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia’s eastern province of Papua on February 9, a disaster agency official said.
Hanoi (VNA) - Four people were killed andseveral houses and buildings damaged after a 5.4-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia’seastern province of Papua on February 9, a disaster agency official said.

According to Jonathan Koirewoa, manager of the operationcontrol center for the provincial disaster management and mitigation agency, theearthquake caused strong tremors within 2-3 seconds, damaging houses, arestaurant and several buildings.

The agency also said that four people were killed in a caféthat collapsed due to the disaster. A risk assessment of the quake is underway.

The country's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency(BMKG) reported the earthquake struck at 13:28pm (local time) with itsepicenter located 1 km southwest of the provincial capital of Jayapura and adepth of 10 km.

The earthquake did not have the potential to trigger atsunami, it said, adding that several aftershocks took place after the main shock./.
