Indonesia, Papua New Guinea strengthen tourism cooperation

Indonesian Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno said his ministry will collaborate with Skouw Cross-Border Post (PLBN), Jayapura, Papua, Chief Administrator Yan Numberi, for tourism and creative economy development in Indonesia-Papua New Guinea (PNG) border.
Hanoi (VNA) –Indonesian Tourism and Creative Economy MinisterSandiaga Uno said his ministry will collaborate with Skouw Cross-Border Post(PLBN), Jayapura, Papua, Chief Administrator Yan Numberi, for tourism andcreative economy development in Indonesia-Papua New Guinea (PNG) border.

The official was quoted by local media assaying that the ministry will carry out two agendas to revive the tourismsector and the creative economy in border areas.

The agenda for tourism and creative economy development in the border regionaims to restore the condition of the Skouw PLBN to what it was before theCOVID-19 pandemic when 1,500 foreign tourists had entered Indonesia, he stated.

The first agenda is the improvement of tourism infrastructure and the creativeeconomy within the framework of the Special Allocation Fund (DAK) that will beproposed in collaboration with the Jayapura City Tourism Service, Uno said.

Moreover, he plans to hold the cross borderfestival in 2023 that necessitates the governments of Indonesia and Papua NewGuinea to collaborate. This festival, offering a variety of arts, cultures,music, films, micro, small, and medium (MSMEs) bazaars, and sporting events,such as fun runs, is expected to bring in 2,000 foreign tourists.

The MSMEs bazaar is expected to revive the economy, especially for Papuancreative economy owners, as an effort to create 4.4 million jobs in 2024, theminister noted.

Meanwhile, Chief Administrator of the SkouwPLBN, Yan Numberi, said he hopes that the cooperation with Indonesia will helphis country’s tourism take off again after three years of being affected by thepandemic.

Yan Numberi emphasised that Indonesia is apotential market for tourism, while Papua New Guinea is rich in naturallandscapes, together with its hospitality, making it an ideal destination forinternational tourists, especially from neighbouring Indonesia./.
