Indonesia, Malaysia work on protection of migrant workers

The Governments of Indonesia and Malaysia have continued talks, focusing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the employment and protection of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) in Malaysia.

Jakarta (VNA) - The Governments ofIndonesia and Malaysia have continued talks, focusing a memorandum ofunderstanding (MoU) on the employment and protection ofIndonesian migrant workers (PMI) in Malaysia.

In her speech after ameeting with Malaysian Minister of Human Resources Saravanan Murugan in Jakartaon December 7, Indonesian Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah said the two sides will continue their debate on the MoUin Jakarta on December 14.

Negotiation process for theMoU on employing and protecting Indonesian domestic workers is part of the twocountries’ commitment on protecting rights and welfare of PMI, especially inthe domestic sector, Fauziyah said.

PMI placement in Malaysiawill only be done once the MoU discussion is completed, she added.

The two governments have also agreed on aone-door system for PMI placement to Malayasia, which seeks to integrate theentire placement process from recruitment, preparation, employment, torepatriation. Implementation of the scheme also aims to reduce migrantplacement costs and simplify monitoring by Indonesia and Malaysia.

According to Minister Murugan, PMI have played an important role in Malaysia’sdevelopment. The number of Indonesian migrant workers in the country reached364,564 in October 2021./.
