Indonesia ensures stable food supply in 2025

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan on December 11 assured that the country’s food supply is safe amid extreme weather.

Jakarta (VNA)ไ – Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan on December 11 assured that the country’s food supply is safe amid extreme weather.

He said it is estimated that Indonesia’s food supply in 2024 will be better than last year, including fisheries, agriculture, and salt production. Therefore, the government plans not to import several commodities such as rice, sugar, salt and corn for animal feed production in 2025 so as to secure food sef-sufficiency by 2027. According to Zulkifli, Indonesia’s rice supply is gradually stablised and will be sufficient until the end of next year. Currently, the total amount of rice reserves distributed exceeds 8 million tonnes, of which 2 million tonnes are stored in warehouses of the State-run Logistics Agency (Bulog) while the rest is distributed among retailers and wholesalers.
Indonesia is maintaining salt reserves of over 800,000 tonnes, exceeding the estimated consumption demand of 500,000 - 600,000 tonnes. This surplus has prompted the government to stop importing salt for consumption.
The minister further said that the government will not import sugar for consumption in 2025, considering the sufficient stock of around 1.4 million tonnes and production estimated at 2.6 million tonnes next year. Meanwhile, corn production for animal feed is targeted to reach 16.7 million tonnes in 2025, while domestic corn needs are around 13 million tonnes./.
