Indonesia develops renewable energy models in rural areas

Speaking at the event, Patrick Tsui, Economic and Private Sector Development Advisor at the British embassy, emphasised that the embassy and the ESDM launched the Mentari Programme - a UK-Indonesia Low Carbon Energy Partnership that aims to support Indonesia’s green energy targets - with the aim of building a brighter and more sustainable future for Indonesia and the world.
By supporting Indonesia's National Hydrogen Strategy and the Comprehensive Investment Policy Plan (JETP), the two parties are establishing cooperative programmes as a foundation for inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
Bagus Mudiantoro, Director of the Mentari Programme, stated that Indonesia is focusing on areas such as hydrogen technology, regional capacity building, and gender-inclusive energy planning. These efforts not only support the decarbonization process but also empower communities, especially women and minority groups.
Delegates at the seminar analysed practical results that should be scaled up in the near future. For examples, in Central Sumba, the programme piloted the use of advanced technology from Amery Mater to supply electricity to 238 homes and public facilities. The local community donated 3,615 sq.m of land for project implementation. Over 13,000 individuals have participated in the programme, with 41% being women, reflecting a commitment to gender issues and inclusivity.
The collaboration between the UK Embassy in Jakarta and the Mentari Programme has created innovative funding methods that can support small and medium-sized renewable energy projects; generate scalable and sustainable models; and provide solar power 24/7 to hundreds of households in Indonesia./.
