Indonesia develops infrastructure in tourism areas

Jakarta (VNA)
– Indonesia’s Ministry of Public Works and Public Housinghas inked cooperation agreements with seven regional administrations for theconstruction of infrastructure for local residents in tourism areas.

The ministry’s housing and utilities director general Sri Hartoyo said that theprojects cover roads in residential areas, drainage systems and clean waternetworks, for which tender bids are still in process.

The construction is scheduled to begin this year and is expected to completenext year.

Sri Hartoyo said supporting facilities for locals in the tourism areas areimportant so that the people there live decently, adding that the ministry alsohopes that it will help them support tourism activities in their areas.

The seven tourism areas are Borobobudur in Central Java, Morotai island inMaluku, Labuan Bajo tourism site in East Nusa Tenggara, Wakatobi National Parkin Southeast Sulawesi, Thousand Islands in Jakarta, Lake Toba in North Sumatraand Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park in East Java.

Some 1 trillion of rupiahs (75.1 million USD) is allocated for the sevenagreements.

Indonesia is striving to welcome 20 million tourists by 2019, doubling currentfigure of 12 million people per year. The country plans to receive 15 millionforeign holiday-makers this year.

Last year, the tourism sector contributed 172 trillion rupiahs (nearly 13billion USD) to the state budget.-VNA
