Hanoi (VNA) - Indonesia declared a state ofemergency around a port on Borneo island on April 3 after a large oil spill andfire killed four people last weekend.
The fire started on March 31 in the port city of BalikpapanBay and spread over an area of around 12 sq.km.
Authorities are now able to control the blaze but stillworking to contain the spill. They have warned the public not to carry outactivities that could spark fires.
Balikpapan in East Kalimantan is a major mining and energyhub and home to one of the few oil refineries in the country run by stateenergy firm Pertamina.
The company said it is investigating where the oil hadoriginated from. It added that its own underwater pipeline in the area did nothave any leaks and there have been no disruptions to its plant’s operations.-VNA
