The Indonesian Health Ministry has confirmed the second case of human infection from avian influenza H5N1 in the country this year, which claimed the life of a 33-year-old man in Jakarta.

Directorof the ministry’s Health Research and Development Centre Tjandra YogaAditama said that the victim, Reza Ahmadi, was pronounced dead in lateMay.

The first H1N1 death was recorded in April, with atwo-year-old toddler in Wonogiri, Central Java, catching the virusfollowing exposure to live poultry. Prior to her death, almost 70chickens had died from an apparent avian flu infection.

According to Tjandra, there have been 17 confirmed cases worldwide ofavian flu in humans this year. Cambodia has recorded the most so far,with nine cases, while Indonesia, Egypt, Vietnam and China have recordedtwo each.

Accumulatively, Indonesia has recorded the highest number of avian flu infection cases to date.-VNA
