Indonesia busts massive marijuana trafficking ring

Jakarta (VNA) ℱ- The Narcotics Investigation Centre (NIC) under Indonesia's National Police Criminal Investigation Directorate has announced the interception of a major trafficking operation, seizing 74 kg of marijuana from an inter-provincial network spanning from Mandailing Natal to Jakarta.

Head of the NIC Task Force, Senior Commissioner Zulkarnaen Harahap, in a statement on February 23 stated the operation took place on February 16.

๊ According to him, the Special Team of Sub-Directorate 3 of the National Police's Criminal Investigation Directorate received information about a shipment of marijuana from Mandailing Natal District, North Sumatra, to Jakarta via land transport using a pickup truck.

Acting on this information, the team immediately conducted analysis and surveillance. On February 16 at noon, they successfully intercepted the shipment of the illicit goods in West Pasaman District, West Sumatra. The team seized 74 kilograms of marijuana hidden in four sacks and disguised with fruit. In addition, two cell phones were also confiscated, he added. The suspects are facing charges under Indonesia's Narcotics Law No. 35 of 2009 and the Psychotropic Substances Law No. 5 of 1997. Convictions under these laws carry severe penalties, including the death sentence, life imprisonment, or up to 20 years in prison, along with fines reaching up to 10 billion IDR (approximately 613,000 USD)./.
