India, Japan vow to cooperate with ASEAN for regional peace, prosperity

India and Japan have pledged to cooperate with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to reach common goals for regional peace and prosperity.

New Delhi (VNA) – India and Japan have pledged to cooperate with theAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to reach common goals forregional peace and prosperity.

They made the commitment during the first India-Japan Foreign and Defence MinisterialDialogue (2+2) held in New Delhi, the capital city of India, on November 30.

The dialogue was held in pursuance of the decision taken byIndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe at the13th India-Japan Annual Summit in October 2018.

TheIndian delegation was led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and ExternalAffairs Minister S Jaishankar. Japan's Foreign Affairs Minister ToshimitsuMotegi and Defence Minister Taro Kono led the Japanese side.

During the meeting, India and Japan reaffirmed the importance of the centralrole and solidarity of ASEAN in promoting peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacificregion, according to a statement released after the dialogue.

Relating to the East Sea issue, the two nations reiterated the importance ofmaritime and aviation freedom, unobstructed legal trade, and peacefulsettlement of disputes on the basis of full respect for legal and diplomaticprocesses in line with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention onthe Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Japan and India also called for strengthening international cooperation andstepping up the sharing of intelligence information on terrorism prevention andcombat. Stressing the importance of maritime safety in building a free, open, inclusiveand rules-based Indo-Pacific region, they affirmed to boot collaboration inbuilding capacity on maritime security and awareness, even through cooperation withother nations.  

The two sides decided to hold the next India-Japan Foreign and DefenceMinisterial Dialogue (2+2) in Tokyo./.
