Helmets for Kids taken to one more northern school

NGO Asia Injury Prevention Foundation has introduced the Helmets for Kids programme at the Phu Xuan Primary School in Binh Xuyen district, Vinh Phuc province, hoping to increase the rate of students wearing helmets.

Hanoi (VNS/VNA) - NGO Asia Injury Prevention Foundation has introducedthe Helmets for Kids programme at the Phu Xuan Primary School in Binh Xuyen district,Vinh Phuc province, hoping to increase the rate of students wearing helmets.

Itsaid in a press release on December 20 that no student wears helmets whencoming to the school on motorcycles with their parents.

NguyenTrong Thai, chief of the National Traffic Safety Committee secretariat, said:“The issue of children not using helmets is of great concern, which highlightsthe need for strong collaboration with the private sector to address trafficsafety issues related to children.

“Theneed for greater road crash prevention awareness at the Phu Xuan Primary Schoolis of utmost importance. Students should not be on our roads without protectiveequipment for their developing brains.”

The Helmetsfor Kids programme demonstrates to students, as well as theirparents, the importance of wearing a helmet whenever they are travelling on amotorcycle or bicycle, he added.

Theprogramme gifted helmets to students and taught them injury prevention on roadsthrough various activities and games.

NguyenThao Chi, a fifth-grader, said: “Before the programme I knew that I should weara helmet, but my family could not afford to provide me one. I am so happy Ihave this helmet now, and will wear it always.”

TheAIP Foundation has collaborated with the Vietnam National Traffic SafetyCommittee and Ministry of Education and Training for the programme withsponsorship from the Vietnam Garment Manufacturing Company-TAL Apparel.  

Helmetsfor Kids was implemented for the first time in Binh Xuyen district last year atthe Ba Hien B Primary School, and resulted in 76 percent of its studentswearing helmets as against 1 percent before the programme.

GreigCraft, founder and president of the AIP Foundation, said: “Changing the culturesurrounding road safety is not always easy, but that’s why we start in theclassroom by targeting children. The Helmets for Kids programme is not onlyabout providing new helmets, it is also about teaching young children importantskills which will last throughout their lifetime.”/.
