HCM City to issue communication materials on sexual harassment
Ho Chi Minh City will issue a set of communication materials on gender equality and prevention of sexual harassment in public places, aiming to help build a safer city.

HCM City (VNA) – Ho Chi Minh City will issue a setof communication materials on gender equality and prevention of sexualharassment in public places, aiming to help build a safer city.
The municipal Department of Labour, Invalids andSocial Affairs said the publications will include radio broadcasts, comics,posters, and leaflets disseminating information about gender equality, ways torecognise sexual harassment in public places, and measures to prevent anddenounce those behaviours.
Tran Thi Thanh Kim, head of the Department’s unitfor Child Care and Protection, and Gender Equality office, said at aconsultation workshop on August 23 that the communication materials werecompiled based on a survey in five districts of HCM City in 2016. The survey resultsdetailed that there were many obstacles for sexual harassment prevention andgender equality.
Le Thi Lan Phuong, a programme officer at UNWomen Vietnam, said that girls and women of all ages rarely feel safe in publicplaces. Harassing behaviours are shown through unwanted attention in terms oflanguage, gestures, actions, or touching.
The HCM City survey showed that 49 percent ofrespondents said they have witnessed the sexual harassment of women and girlsin public places, over 18 percent of interviewed women said they have sufferedfrom sexual harassment or violence, and 11 percent of male respondentsconfessed to having had sexually harassing or violent behaviours.
The places where harassment is most common areparks, streets, buses, bus stops, and areas with poor lighting, the surveyshowed.
At the workshop, many participants said in orderto prevent sexual harassment in public places, agencies and sectors in HCM Cityneed to step up communication coordination to raise awareness, upgradeinfrastructure facilities, and provide more support services for victims andwitnesses.
They also called for the building of a morecivilised and modern environment in public places, as well as programmes toraise awareness of dangers for women of all ages so as to help turn HCM Cityinto a safe and friendly city. –VNA
Ho Chi Minh City should take intervention measures to build itself into a safe city that prevents women and girls from sexual harassment and other forms of sexually violence in public spaces.
One of the solutions to prevent sexual harassment at school is to equip students with the necessary skills to identify signs of sexual abuse so that they are able to protect themselves, heard a workshop in Hanoi on December 27.
