HCM City, Thai courts share experience in combating drug crime

HCMCity (VNA) – ChiefJudge of the Supreme Court of Thailand Cheep Jullamon worked withrepresentatives from the People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City on February 26 aspart of activities during his ongoing working visit to Vietnam.

At the working session, the two sides shared their experience in adjudicatingdrug cases.

While briefing the Thai official on theprofessional work of the municipal People’s Court, Chief Judge Ung Thi XuanHuong said the number of cases handled by her agency accounts for one sixth of thatin the country, and increases about 10 percent each year.

According to Huong, the municipal two-level People’s Court received more than75,000 cases in 2018, of which over 61,000 were resolved, reaching 80.94percent. On average, each judge in the city handles around 12 cases per month.

Chief Justice Jullamon highly valued the efforts of HCM City’s judges, sayingthat he hopes the two sides will have more chances to share their experience inthe time to come.

He highlighted several similarities of the two nations’ courts, noting that thisis a favourable condition for their court officials to promote bilateralcooperation across a range of fields in a practical manner.

Regarding the trial of criminal drug cases, Pham Luong Toan, chief judge of thecriminal court under the HCM City People’s Court, said more than 6,600 criminalcases were handled by his agency in 2018, roughly one quarter of which were relatedto drugs.

According to Jullamon, the number of drug casesmarks up one third of criminal cases in his country.

The two sides’ courts need to boost cooperation and share experience in thiswork, contributing to effectively fighting this type of crime, he stressed. –VNA
