HCM City launches Earth Hour 2017

More than 1,000 voluntary students and two ambassadors of the Earth Hour 2017 campaign on March 11 rode bicycles on several streets in the Ho Chi Minh City’s centre.

HCMCity (VNA) - More than 1,000 voluntary students and two ambassadorsof the Earth Hour 2017 campaign on March 11 rode bicycles on several streets inthe Ho Chi Minh City’s centre to call on residents to switch off lights andunnecessary electric appliances to save energy.

Thebicycle rides will continue for two more weeks throughout the city.

Theactivity kicked off the campaign in the city held by the Department of NaturalResources and Environment in co-operation with the Department of Industry andTrade, the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, Saigon Co.op and the SaiGon Giai Phong (Liberated Sai Gon) newspaper.

Volunteersalso changed avatars and covered on their Facebook pages in response to thecampaign. They also danced in a flashmob with each other in the launchingceremony of the campaign.

OnMarch 25, the campaign’s main event of Join Global Lights Off-Earth Hour 2017will attract more than 5,000 young people in the city to gather at the YouthCultural House in District 1 to call for lights to be switched off at 8.30pmfor one hour in the world.

Thetwo ambassadors of the Earth Hour 2017 are actor Isaac and singer Ai Phuong.

Inthe campaign, many volunteers stand at crossroads in the city to call ondrivers of motorbikes to turn off engines when stopping at red light to reduceconsumption of petroleum and waste into the environment.

Moreover,communication to encourage the use of bio-fuel E5, saving water and otheractivities will be carried out during the campaign.

Aproject on green tourism destinations will also be carried out tointroduce tourists, including foreign students who come to Vietnam under thecity universities’ academic exchange programme, to ecological tourism sites inthe city and other places, including tours of the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe canal.

Inthe campaign, high school students will be encouraged to improve theirawareness of environment protection and saving energy.

Thesystem of lights on the lobbies of several apartment buildings in the city willbe upgraded.

Fansmade from empty bottles for disadvantaged residential areas in the city will beinstalled during the campaign.

TheEarth Hour was carried out for the first time in Vietnam in 2009, saving140,000kWh, and in HCM City in 2011, when 451,000 kWh was saved.-VNA

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

🅠 Wutip storm ravages central Vietnam, leaving trail of destruction

🧸 Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public.
