HCM City authorities listen to children’s thoughts

HCM City (VNA) – The authorities in Ho Chi MinhCity held a meeting on February 24 with more than 170 representatives of localchildren at the outset of the 2018 lunar year.
At the meeting, children voiced their concerns overeducation issues, such as unpractical textbook contents and school violence.
They said they expect to have more time for practice in theschool curriculum, more smart libraries, particularly in outskirt areas, andbetter nutrition sources and physical training programmes.
Many of them asked the city’s leader to pay attention tospecial education so that every district would have at least one facility forthe disabled, while others wanted life skills courses to be included on theschool curriculum.
Environmental pollution also irritated the youngparticipants, who recommended regular environmental cleaning activities andpublic-awareness-raising campaigns.
Taking into account the children’s comments, Secretary ofthe municipal Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan ordered local agencies andsectors to care for child protection and education, and to create bestconditions possible for the younger generation to live and study in a healthyenvironment.
He tasked the education sector with improving teaching andlearning quality for comprehensive development of children.
Nhan said meetings like this should be replicated atdifferent level of authorities so that children’s concerns would be heard andpromptly addressed.

Children in HCM City are suffering from an overload in school curriculum, members of the Children’s Council of Ho Chi Minh City said at the council’s second meeting themed “Our city” on February 4.
Ho Chi Minh City plans to have all students learn English since the first grade starting in the 2018-2019 academic year, according to Nguyen Quang Vinh, head of the primary education division at the city’s Department of Education and Training.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.
The festival highlighted the contributions and robust development of Vietnam's revolutionary press over the past century while promoting press products and showcasing the creativity of Vietnamese journalists.
The programme on sustainable poverty reduction has achieved its annual targets for reducing the poverty rate as assigned by the National Assembly and the Government. It has fulfilled five specific objectives and five five-year goals, and met nine out of 12 indicators related to addressing basic social service shortages.
