Hanoi on August 24 made public a planning of a new water plant using surface water from the Hong (Red) River in its Lien Hong commune, Dan Phuong district, aiming to supply sufficient clean water to residents in its southern and northern districts. According to the Hanoi Water Limited Company (Hawaco), the first stage of the project will be completed in 2018, expectedly providing 150,000 cubic metres of clean water a day. The second stage is scheduled to finish by 2020 to raise the capacity to 300,000 cubic meters a day.
The plant will cost around 3.7 trillion VND (164.5 million USD) and its construction is planned to begin in this October.
Chairman of the Dan Phuong district People’s Committee Nguyen Huu Hoang pledged that the district will work closely with Hawaco to deploy the project as scheduled. The construction of the plant is seen as a move taken by Hanoi to ease water shortages and ensure a long-term water source for the city when the main pipeline bringing water from the Da River for its residents have repeatedly been broken, causing supply interruptions.-VNA
