Hanoi maps route for waste treatment

Vu Hong Khanh, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, saidHanoi will have 17 concentrated solid waste treatment areas under theapproved city master plan through 2030.

Besidesthe eight existing facilities, which will all be ungraded, the city willbuild nine new waste treatment plants and five solid waste transportcentres, Khanh said.

The planned new facilities will be located in Dong Anh, Chuong My, Thach That, My Duc and Ba Vi suburban districts.

A plant with a capacity of 500 tonnes per day in Chau Can commune,Phu Xuyen district, will go into operation by early next year at thelatest.

The city encouraged enterprises andorganisations to take part in treating waste in rural areas, useadvanced technologies to turn waste into energy, protect the environmentand reduce costs, Khanh added.

Hanoi currentlyproduces around 5,400 tonnes of waste each day, expected to grow to8,500 tonnes by 2020 and 11,300 tonnes by 2030.

Only 20 percent of waste is currently treated, the rest is buried.-VNA

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.

Renowned artists including Ha Anh Tuan, Den Vau, and Phan Manh Quynh, along with many directors and attendees, took part in planting hundreds of rare tree species such as mun (Diospyros mun) and cho chi (Parashorea chinensis) in the Thung Bong area of the Cuc Phuong National Park, contributing to forest ecosystem restoration.
